Koh Chang nightlife leaves Samet for dead if you’re picking between the two. There are some really cool beach bars and cafés here, plus those into the girlie scene will also be pleased to learn that there are Koh Chang beer bars in all main beach areas. Koh Chang is no Pattaya, however, and those coming here expecting very hot go go girls and mega clubs will be disappointed.
Saying that, Koh Chang does also cater to party animals, mainly in the form of beach bars where buckets filled with a Thai whisky, Red Bull and Coke mix is the norm. These places spill out onto the sand at night and attract all types, including freelancing prostitutes when the bars shut. There are also some lively Koh Chang pubs and most places come with free internet, sports on TV, great music and pool.
Discerning tourists may prefer to stick to the resorts, where there is more civilised drinking in the bars and cafés there, and indulge in the town nightlife later on. Many of the larger hotels also come with the obligatory karaoke and there are also noisy standalone versions over the island.
The best Koh Chang nightlife can be found in White Sand Beach, which has the best selection of pubs and girlie bars. The latter reside in the southern part of town known as ‘Little Pattaya’. The girls here are as keen, if not keener, as those in Pattaya for you to take them home and have your evil way. Beer bars are in Klong Prao Beach, Kai Bae Beach and Lonely Beach.
Bars in Koh Chang
White Sand Beach
There are cafés, beach bars, beer bars, pubs and nightclubs within Koh Chang’s top resort. It has the biggest selection of either type and especially beer bars with prostitutes.
Bar 69: Recent bar next door to the Laap Steak restaurant, featuring the typical setup of small bar, pool table, beers and cocktails. They also do snacks.
Oodie’s Place: Very popular place featuring live music and a variety of genres, a pool table and movies, and good Thai and French food. Tel: (081) 853 1271.
15 Palms: Another beach bar that is good for drinking on the sand and watching fire shows. Especially known for its well priced cocktails.
Sabay Bar: Most popular bar on White Sand Beach and perhaps the whole island, Sabay is your typical beach bar with seating on the beach and fire shows, as well as having an air-conditioned indoor bit. Also has a club with a Filipino band. Sabay Bar is always busy and especially so on weekends when crowds from Bangkok descend.
Little Pattaya: This is the main girlie bar complex in White Sand Beach and resides near the hill at the south end. It has several noisy bars full with semi-attractive bar girls and many ladyboys. Girls usually want 1,000 baht for short-time, but can often be bartered down.
Paddy’s Palms: First Irish-style pub on White Sand Beach featuring imported beers, including Guinness and Kilkenny, as well as food.
Milky Bar: Karaoke bar with big screens and a decent sound system. They also do VIP rooms and have a pool table. Good fun for groups. Tel: (086) 392 0348.
One Bar: Koh Chang’s only club and the best place for dancing. Has a good atmosphere and guest DJs and is popular with both locals and visitors. Tel: (086) 158 1088.
Klong Prao Beach
Klong Prao is the next beach down and is a lot quieter. It’s not completely devoid of nightlife, though, and has several fun bars. Have a look at VJ Plaza in Chai Chet Village. It has bars and cafés with cheap beer, snacks, pool and some girls.
Kai Bae Beach
More exciting than Klong Prao but more laid-back than White Sand, Kai Bae Beach is quiet by day but gets busy at night. There are many relaxing cafés as well as pockets of beer bars with cheap girlies in. In addition, Kai Bae has some beach bars.
This beach gets particularly lively and hosts Koh Chang’s full and half-moon parties. Cheap cocktails and whisky bucket concoctions are the theme here and there are some cool bars. Lemon Bar is the in place.
