The vast majority of foreigners in Thailand with Thai girlfriends are dating current or ex-bar girls. Most go with sexy Thai bar girls and end up taking them out of the bar as a live-in girlfriend or, eventually, a wife. Although it can work, most of these relationships fail due to the girl playing around.
The reason why most men go this route is because bar girls are so easily available, plus picking up a local lass not on the game is very hard. This is, in large part, to the fact that they might not speak English, but also that most Thai girls don’t want a foreign boyfriend because of the stigma.
A better way to find girlfriend material is to trawl the online dating agencies, where thousands of lonely Thai females look for foreign men for fun, companionship or, indeed, love. Many of these girls are the genuine article, tired of dating philandering Thai men and wanting to try out a foreigner.
On the other hand, some of those registered are also bar girls who are in it to try to snag overseas foreign boyfriends to send them money. If you’re outside Thailand, you should seriously consider this route as long distance relationships are tough as it is, but barely impossible with someone you don’t really know.
Thai women can make excellent girlfriends and they are typically very feminine and sexy. Thai females have a certain swagger about them and retain shape well into their 50s, even after bearing children. They are mostly petite and small breasted, but you do get the odd six-footer that looks like she’s just come off the catwalk.
In fact, walk around Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong and Siam Square shopping areas and you will see some of the most beautiful women. Unfortunately, most of these are out of reach for even the most fluent foreign speaker of Thai and tend to stick with their own. These ‘hi-so’ types (high society, high class) are certainly not untouchable, though for the average tourist fresh off the plane, well, keep dreaming. However, many tend to be incredibly vain (having been doted on and told they’re beautiful every day by all around them) and a lot of work to keep happy.
The average Thai office worker can make perfect girlfriend material. To meet these, it is best to frequent inner city cafés, restaurants and shops that they would frequent. Grocery stores are also good for bumping into them, and banks for those who plan on living here. Whenever you are out and about checking for Thai girlfriends, always be sure to dress well.
Thai women can be bowled over by a well dressed man and while this is also true in the West, the difference in Thailand is you don’t have to be that good looking and they’ll be impressed. You don’t need to prance around in a suit, but a shirt (or polo shirt) and long trousers are ideal, together with a good pair of shoes. However silly it sounds, the latter is essential for snagging your cut-above, middle class office worker.
What’s a Gik?
Giks are a type of female friend (not a girlfriend) that you go out with and have sex with, but with no strings attached. This is so for both sexes, as both men and women are known as giks in Thailand when they go this route. However, although you don’t actually pay for sex like you would with a prostitute, you pay for everything else – going out, food, shopping, et cetera. If you’re lucky enough to be able to find a gik or two then, as a foreigner, you’re doing better than most of the rest.
As a foreigner, your only real chance of Thai girlfriends giks, though, is if you are being chased by a girl in the sex trade. A regular girlfriend that you are having sexual relations with is not considered a gik; she is simply a Thai girlfriend. Some bar girls will go with foreign men and not let them pay. These will be men they like and the idea is to snag them and get them to fall in love with her. This is still essentially not a gik, but is as close as most farangs get to having one.
Tips. Thai girls like to eat well, be seen in shopping malls, enjoy going to the cinema, and especially like taking their boyfriends to visit family. When dating Thai girls, be careful when talking about royalty and refrain from mentioning Thailand or its people in a bad light.
